Struvite urolithiasis in children – own experience

Abstract
Introduction. Struvite stones occurs 5–7% in children with urolithiasis. It is associated with urinary tract infections caused by urease-producing bacteria. Distinguishing features of struvite urolithiasis are the variety of clinical courses, high recurrence, and risk of developing chronic renal failure.Objective. To present own experience on the occurrence of struvite urolithiasis in children.Material and Methods. Three case reports are described (2 girls, 1 boy) aged from 11 months to 18 years with struvite urolithiasis treated in the Department of Paediatric Nephrology in Wrocław in 2010–2012.Conclusions. 1) Struvite urolithiasis is rare in children and its clinical course is characterized by a large diversity of clinical symptoms, depending on the age, size and location of the stone and associated risk factors. 2) Treatment must be considered not only to eliminate the kidney stones and sterilization of the urinary tract, but prevention of urolithiasis including urinary tract infection prophylaxis as well. 3) As one of the few types of urolithiasis, struvite kidney stones can lead to the development of chronic kidney disease.Key words: struvite urolithiasis, children, diagnosis, treatment
