Sumy regional ethnography museum’s contribution to the protection of monuments and art in Sumy oblast in 1920s

Abstract

The paper deals with monuments protection activity of Sumy historical museum (later – Sumy regional ethnography museum) headed by N. Onatskiy in 1920s. Following certain rules for the development of museums, Sumy cell had certain characteristics. Among the priority areas of work were defined such activities as examination of old estates, removal from private collections different things (books, paintings, etc.) of historical and art value; study of archaeological sites and remains of natural origin; monuments protection popularization among population; replenishment of museum collections from private ones. Having art education N. Onatskiy paid much attention to study of art paintings, and painted by himself. Thanks to the efforts of museum director and his colleagues funds enriched with paintings of I. Repin, L. Borovykovsky, V. Serov and etchings with inscriptions of T. Shevchenko and other unique exhibits. Archaeological excavations were conducted under the direction of encyclopedic scientist from Romny region M. Makarenko (1877-1938). The unique complex of monuments was discovered and explored near Sumy, it is still interesting for archaeologists. Despite the difficult financial situation in the country, joint efforts of Ukrainian Archaeological Committee and local authorities solved the issue of financing of archaeological excavations. M. Makarenko helped to solve other issues related to the activity of the museum. There is the similarity in destinies of the two researchers. For the first time report of Sumy regional ethnography museum is published in 1926, it is stored in the archive of Scientific Institute of Archaeology NAS of Ukraine. It is spoken in detail about the main achievements and challenges of the museum, a number of issues are outlined to be solved by the state authorities.
