Taking medications by students without doctor’s consultation

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2013, Vol 19, Issue 4

Abstract

Self-treatment is a type of health behaviour, undertaken in order to eliminate a disorder or undesirable symptom without the orders of a doctor. The objective of the study was to recognize and describe behaviours related with treatment in a selected group of students, and assessment of the reasons for undertaking these behaviours. The research was conducted in June in four public universities in Lublin, by the method of a diagnostic survey using a questionnaire designed by the author.Respondents generally use self-treatment once-several times a year (71.6% of females, 62.2% of males). Both females (41.2%) and males (32.1) substitute a doctor’s consultation with the advice of a pharmacist. 61.5% of females and 59.3% of males decide about the dosage of a medicine based on the leaflet attached to the package. Lack of time is a reason for the application of self-treatment among 66.4% of females and 48.6% of males. The results of self-treatment are assessed as satisfactory by 67.8% of females and 65.1% of males. More than 46.0% of females and 35.6% of males would ‘rather’ participate in education in the field of safe usage of medicines. The preferred forms of education among women are open courses and lectures (44.7%), among male practical classes (39.4%).Health behaviours in the field of self-treatment among females and males in the survey are similar. Education in the field of safe usage of medicines awakens students’ interest. It is essential to convince students about attractive forms of education.Key wordsself-treatment, students, health behaviours
