The Effect of Attentional-Focus Instruction on Peripheral Transfer from Dominant Hand to Non- Dominant Hand and Vice Versa in Basketball Dribbling

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2014, Vol 8, Issue 5

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of focus of attention (external, internal) on peripheral transfer of basketball dribbling. Recent researches have shown that the focus of attention plays an important role in performing and learning motor skills. In this study, 60 elementary school students with age (11.7±4) were randomly divided into four groups. Considering the attentional focus instruction, they performed basketball dribbling with their dominant and non-dominant hands (with regard to their group) for eight weeks (31 sessions). The results showed that the instruction of interlimb transfer was carried out in both external and internal focus of attention by both dominant and nondominant hands. Also, external focus of attention significantly facilitated interlimb transfer more than internal focus of attention (P?0.05). It can be concluded that focus of attention as an effective factor of performance and learning skills facilitated peripheral transfer.
