The Emotional Dimension during Speech Production in the Foreign Language Learning Process

Journal Title: International Journal of Langauges' Education and Teaching - Year 2017, Vol 5, Issue 4

Abstract

The feelings or emotions of the learners in the foreign language teaching and learning process play an important role. With the connection of emotion and cognition in the learning process, the positive feelings of the learners have a great importance to their learning success. As a productive skill, speaking has a very intense relationship with emotions because it has to be in a fluency in real time. Unfortunately, speaking skills tend to reach a lower level than the other three (writing, reading and listening) skills in the language teaching process. This qualitative study concentrates on the data (sound recording) obtained through an interview during a speech production exercise. In order to identify the emotional dimension of the learners during the speech production, there was used an interview via the question "How do you feel while you are speaking a foreign language (English)?". Participants in this survey were 29 students enrolled in the fall term 2016 - 2017 at the University of Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli (Turkey). Opinions on the emotional dimension during student speech production were categorized. The results of this qualitative study show that the emotional dimension of the learners in a university context groups in three categories (positive, negative and previous education).
