Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2014, Vol 10, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction. Nowadays, more and more attention is attracted to the aesthetics and harmony of the human shapes with a special consideration of the face and the smile. The notion of beauty has changed over the span of recent centuries. The symmetry and aesthetics of the body have been and still continue to be the subjects of interest of specialists in aesthetic medicine and stomatology. Aim. The aim of this study was to present the importance of face and smile aesthetics in orthodontic treatment planning. Material and methods. A review of literature from 1995 to 2014 was made using the PubMed database and employing the following key words: face aesthetics, smile aesthetics, treatment planning, orthodontic treatment, facial proportions, and aesthetics. Results. Thirty-two literature items from the years 1995-2013 have been selected and reviewed. Conclusions. The assessment of face and smile aesthetics may differ according to the patient’s age, gender, and race. A growing interest in orthodontic treatment among adult patients denotes an increase in their expectations related to treatment outcomes. While planning orthodontic treatment, the reasons why a patient presents for a consultation have to be taken into account. Since the canon of beauty may significantly differ among orthodontists, dentists and laypeople, patient’s own expectations related to an improvement in face aesthetics have to be included. It is also necessary to pay attention to an improvement in the aesthetics of the dentition with a particular focus on the smile. The principles of facial aesthetics are of utmost importance for treatment planning in contemporary aesthetic medicine and in all the areas of dentistry, particularly in orthodontics, maxillofacial surgery and aesthetic dentistry.
