The rise of Peronism in San Luis. The traditional political leadership and the 1943-1946 federal intervention

Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2015, Vol 7, Issue 12

Abstract

Peronism in San Luis did not arise from the workers` movement, as in the other central regions of the country, since the economic and social characteristics of the province prevented the scarce number of union workers from being incorporated into the provincial politics. The Peronist movement in the province emerged from a sector of the traditional elites with higher social roots, experience and insertion in the provincial politics, which allowed them to displace the labor leaders when forming the Peronist coalition. The 1943-1946 Federal intervention was decisive in the displacement of the conservatives from key positions in the provincial government, in the restructuring and widening of the State and in the alliance with the UCR (Renovating Board) that won the 1946 elections.
