“THE UNIVERSAL UNCONSCIOUSNESS” OF SATOSHI KON

Abstract

The study reconstructs the Satoshi Kon’s concept of universal (collective) unconsciousness on basis of the anime of Satoshi Kon: “Perfect Blue”, “Paranoia Agent”, and “Paprika”. Satoshi Kon demonstrates that popular culture is a collective (universal) unconsciousness based on compensation. In “Perfect Blue” by the example of the role model of the Idol Satoshi Kon shows that appropriated and accepted in culture (including popular culture) the behavior patterns created, preserved, expanded and imitated are something like archetypes of the collective unconsciousness of the Japanese popular (youth) culture of which loss begs for a compensation. In ‘Paranoia Agent” Satoshi Kon explores the phenomenon of creation of a cultural product as a form of compensation for the loss: an individual one who experienced the trauma of the loss tries to compensate the loss, for example, by the way of directing of the psychic energy to creation of cultural products; this is an unconscious process. Moreover, Satoshi Kon shows that the products of the compensation can affect the collective unconsciousness: the products of the compensation can be transformed into the cultural products and then integrated into the culture as the consumer products; the products of someone else’s compensation can be consumed by people unconsciously because the culture as a collective unconsciousness demands it from them. In “Paprika” Satoshi Kon shows that popular culture as a mythology and collective unconsciousness through the images of its own products penetrates into the individual unconsciousness and shows its own signs in dreams. In tote the anime of Satoshi Kon are the cinematographic interpretations of analytic psychology of Carl Gustav Jung.
