Życie diaspory polskiej w obwodzie kaliningradzkim w świetle wyników badań terenowych

Journal Title: Przegląd Wschodni - Year 2017, Vol 14, Issue 55

Abstract

the Russian Federation, based on analysis of academic writings and various source materials, are the starting point for the author’s research poll. Research participants included Polish diaspora organisation activists in Kaliningrad, as well as the “rank and file” members of the Polish diaspora. The principal part of the field study consisted of research based on a questionnaire conducted amongst the above mentioned members of the Polish diaspora in Kaliningrad. The research poll was intended to determine the essential nationality traits of the Polish diaspora and evaluate the activity of Polish diaspora organisations, as well as their actual and potential positions amongst NGOs operating in the region. The research concluded that the Polish diaspora inhabiting the region displays national and religious identity traits which are specific to all diaspora concentrations in the East. It is a collective consisting of individuals of Polish origin, arrived from different areas of the former Soviet Union to the region, possessing fixed customs, language competences and ties to Polishness. The researched group is marked by its relatively poor knowledge of Polish language. It is also characterised by a moderate level of contact with Polish culture and art, as well as an average level of interest in Polish media. As a result of the research, the image of the Polish diaspora which emerges is of a collective consisting of individuals with different traits and origins, and various degrees of attachment to Polishness. The researched group is clearly divided into those active in diaspora organisations of relatively defined national identity and the “rank and file” diaspora members, characterised by undetermined national identity and limited ties with Polishness. During research, various factors influencing Polish national identification among members of the Polish diaspora in Kaliningrad Oblast were determined, as well as the strength of impact of specific factors.
