Abstract

Soil degradation has been identified as one of the major threats to European soils. This article describes the conditions under which wind erosion of soils occurs in Ukraine and the potential soil loss caused by this problem. The purpose of this paper is to find the best option, from both an economic and an environmental point of view, to conserve and restore soil productivity on the land suffering from and at risk of wind erosion. Losses of humus and nutrients from the soil through deflation have been calculated for the districts of Volyn in 1999–2009, and ecological and economic damage from the loss of soil through deflation has been identified for Volyn district and the village of Pichcha. Three options to mitigate and compensate for the losses of organic matter and nutrients on the affected lands are assessed for the comparative effectiveness of the measures in the Pichcha village, Shatsky district, Volyn region during 2008–2012. In these sites, the research identified that the best measure against soil deflation as changing the economic use of lands at risk of soil erosion by wind. In particular, the halting of cattle grazing and the creation of overseeding grass meadows. This options has a number of advantages, including: the cultivation of perennial grasses generates income from the sale of seed clover in the first year and hay for following four years; through nitrogen fixing bacteria associated with the annual grasses improving nitrogen levels in the soil; and, through halting the deflationary processes in the different soil types in the investigated areas and allowing for the steady build up of a fertile humus layer.

Abstract

The research results showed that the use of organic and mineral fertilizers in the grain – fodder crop rotation facilitates improving soil nutritive regime and increasing soil fertility by increasing the content of easy hydrolysable nitrogen, movable phosphorus and exchange potassium in sod – podzolic sandy loam gley soil. Presowing inoculation of maize, field pea and spring barley seeds using such inoculation preparations as rizogumin, mikrogumin and biogran gives a positive effect on soil nutritive regime. This allows to increase the content of nitrogen by 5–10 % and phosphorus – 9–16 %. It was experimentally proved the appropriateness of biogran inoculation preparation use in the biological fertilize system in the sod-podzolic soil of Volyn Polissya region, that allows to increase the productivity of green maize to 40–45 t/ha as well as the rizogumin use allows to increase the productivity of field pea in the organic-mineral system to – 37–40 t/ha. Economic assessment of inoculation preparations use in various fertilize systems while green maize, field pea and spring barley cultivation on sod-podzolic soil was made.

Abstract

Research has demonstrated that the use of weather index insurance is one of the most effective ways of cushioning smallholders against the vagaries of nature like excess rains and drought hence improving smallholders’ food insecurity status. We use cross sectional data from 401 farm households in Embu County, eastern Kenya and a propensity score matching technique. We model the effects of adoption of weather index based insurance decision on food security of the smallholder farmers. We find that a positive impact on food security is associated with the uptake of index insurance. This suggests that index insurance technology can benefit farmers more through up-scaled use of index based insurance in the context of their socio-economic conditions and institutional arrangements.

Abstract

W rozwiązywaniu problemów zawodowych Polacy częściej niż Brytyjczycy wykorzystywali media społecznościowe i korzystali z porad doradców państwowych, natomiast Brytyjczycy częściej niż Polacy z usług prywatnych firm doradczych. W obu krajach badani zainteresowani byli różnorodnymi informacjami dotyczącymi rolnictwa i jego otoczenia. Jednak brytyjscy respondenci więcej uwagi skupiali na poszukiwaniu wiedzy na temat innowacji w rolnictwie niż badani mieszkańcy polskiej wsi, natomiast Polacy w większym stopniu zainteresowani byli informacjami z zakresu technologii produkcji rolniczej niż Brytyjczycy.
