Abstract

The Western Thrace Turks, whose position was recgnised as a minority by Treaty of Lausanne, has started to emigrate from that area in the period of post-Balkan war. The strict minority policy of Military Junta, which seized the Greece government in 1967, caused serious emigration movement from Trace. Although the main direction of emigration is to Turkey, they tended to the West Europe as worker migrants during these years. The migration is proceeded like the worker migrations from Turkey to Europe. The Emigration continued through the family reunion. After the Greek’s gaining in 1988 of right of freely circulation in EU, the second and the bigger migration movement started. Today, because of these migrations ,it is estimated that 25.000 West Thrace Turks is living in Europe. This article handles the migrations of West Thrace Turks part by part and presents a general view about the perception of identity of them with the empiric dates.

Abstract

Abstract Prostitution is an institution whose roots go to the first time periods on history. The most fundamental base depends on the myth that prostitution is inevitable and natural for each and every society. Regardless of whichever the society or the time period is, what constitutes the essence of the prostitution is the domination of men over women and the instrumentalization of women by men. In this process, women have been made a scapegoat by being declared as the source of prostitution, but men have been considered as innocent. The myths used to normalize prostitution in the society while portraying women as being corrupt, the source of any sickness and indecency, lustful and hooked on money, they think the prostitution as being an instrument of prestige and sexual education for men and also a charity as to provide economical and therapeutic help for women. In this context, with 44 women who work both in the streets and also in the whorehouse in Mersin were interviewed on topics ranging from their life stories to work conditions, from their emotional conditions to anticipations for the future. According to the findings of this study, the prostitution bazaar both serves to normalize the prostitution and the exploitation of women by seeing her as a sexual object, and also bring along the economical, emotional and sexual exploitation of women in a multi-faceted web of relationships.

Abstract

Abstract

The development of Turkish Folklore and Folk Literature can be traced by examining both the folklore works whose roots are going back to early oral period of Turkish literature and the evaluations written on these products thoroughly. The development and change in this historical evolution process, from beginning till today, could be reviewed only through examining the works of folk literature and the studies on these works. The use of folklore as a new field of science in Turkey dates back to one century ago. In recent years, there are more publications based on newly improved and theorized folklore methods. Studying the Journals of folklore in which these evaluations and works take place together will not only save time for the researchers but also will give them a more convenient study environment. From this stand point, the development of folklore in Turkey has been studied in this article by examining the historical background as well as by following the improvement of folklore associations and the journals they have been publishing. Thus, for the readers interested in folklore and for the researchers who started to study on this field, following this improvement through these journals will be more than significant.

THE PHENOMENON OF ‘LINGUISTIC TURN’ IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE LITERARY STUDIES’ THEORIES

Abstract

The literary studies concentrated heavily on the theoretical works, especially in the 20th century, and these works put forward then and also use now non-normative concepts which can have a wide array of definitions. Besides semantic changes and transformations of a language’s own structure the variations within the social, cultural, political and scientific paradigms can also be seen as the factors that led to this diversity. Finally, this state of affairs necessitates the emergence of a certain indispensable systematization with the purpose of analyzing a text or - put in a more modern way – a discourse as the object of the literature. One of the goals of this study is while focusing on the phenomenon of “Linguistic Turn” to categorize several Literature Studies’ theories and also to show pragmatic perspective of a common axis inherent to all those theories that emerged after this epistomological shift.

Abstract

In translational action can only be achieved if the translator can combine certain elements of the translating process with the commond ground. These elments can enable the translator to understand the source text and to transfer it to the target culture in the form of a target message. This study aims at explaning the common ground knowledge which plays a role in this action and which is also an important factor through the process. That’s why the study first explains the reason for using common ground kowledge instead of using the concept of common ground. Then, the aim to use this new concept against common ground is shown with the concrete findings. The knowledge which is the center in the communication is also indicated to show its effect and presence in the translation process by examining the translational action at the end of the study. In the light of presented data, it is seen that common ground knowledge affects all the elements which take place within the communication systems like translational action. Besides, the communication can be sustained among people performing the speech action with the presence of this knowledge.

Abstract

War is defined as armed situations, the implementation of all forms of violence targeted at individuals and society, distorting anatomical and psychological integrity. So the war is considered as a direct expression of hate. Wars are inevitable events in human history. Whatever the technology used in the war and gets evaluated according to the criteria war is destructive. This destruction begins long before the time the war began, and shows itself in all areas of life as a biological, psychological and ecological destruction until long after the end of the war. War is common theme in the literature as are the events that are subject to many and different kind of works. Literary works are too much about war. So these produced a kind of book which is called war literature. The Balkan Wars which is still a bleeding wound of Turkish history due to bring pains in its wake and damages posed on social fabric, is also one of the important events that happened in the Balkans after the 19th-century Crimean War and the Ottoman-Russian War (93 War). For the Balkan wars “real end of the Ottoman state” to say, it would not be wrong. In as much as the lands of the Ottoman Empire had lost in 1912-1913, the state can be seen as the central region. These wars, in terms of the Turkish nation, are the only one ring of disaster in the 20th century. Balkan Wars which is deeply influenced Turkish history as politically and socially has affected many of our authors, poets and artists. Looking at the works of writers in this context, it is seen dominated by epic approach, glorified of The Turkish military, intended to give moral to army, and maligned of the enemy by those written at the beginning of war yet. In the texts written at the end of the war, with effect from defeat, it is seen came into prominence of sadness, pessimism, hatred and revenge. Also in these works it is stood out vigorously handling the subject of massacre and migration.

THE IRONY OF THE ROMANESQUE IN ANDRE GIDE'S NOVEL "ISABELLE"

THE IRONY OF THE ROMANESQUE IN ANDRE GIDE'S NOVEL "ISABELLE"

Abstract

The classic novel has a tradition supported by its strong fundamentals. The classic novelist presents us an interesting, fascinating event around which turn a lot of characters whose feelings and behaviours, are deeply described. André Gide opposes to the classic novel arriving to the apex with Balzac’s novels and its traditional forms. He makes it problematic with its classic plot, manner of narration, psychological and phisical descriptions of hereos and spatio-temporal framework. Therefore, in his works Gide criticizes ironically and satirically this traditional novela and its elements containing a romanesque structure. In Gide’ five novels named Andre Walter's Books (Les Cahiers d’André Walter), The Immoralist (L'Immoraliste), The Narrow Gate (La Porte étroit), Isabelle, The Rural Symphony (La Symhonie Pastoral) it is seen a protagonist trying to create firstly an absolute and unchangeable doctrine for himself, then feeling repulsion from his romanesque world while making contact with the external world and real life and afterward jugding and criticizing his former senses. A three-stage psychological evolution is seen in this protagonist: 1-the protagonist, firstly becomes conscious of a fantastic and absolute doctrine he constituted divergently with the real life for himself; 2- When he mets with the real life his mind is confused; 3- Finally he escapes from his former dreams and he judges ironically them. In this anti novel, the romanesque illusion is ironically interrogated and criticised and its dangers for readers is revealed. Gide warns indirectly readers by pointing out the negative effects on the hereo. Gide ironizes this romanesque adventure of the protoganist and gives a critical tone In Isabelle, the protagonist Gérard considers as written for him a love letter written for another that he found in a rundown shack. He falls in love with the heroine Isabelle whose photographe is seen by chance by him. Basing on the observations made in the mansion, he believes that, one day, the imaginary heroine Isabelle embellishing his dreams would come. Gerard himself creating an imaginary world runs after pipe dreams. It is possible to see the romanesque elements in his behaviors and his speeches during the course of the story. He turned into a crazy lover when he found the love letter. The fact that he meets with the real Isabella glorifying his dreames causes that he is disappointed. The real Isabella destroyed the imaginary Isabella. The disappointment of Gerard prevents itself that the reader imitates and emulates him because Gerard has been awakened from the illusion created by imaginary Isabella. In this way the novel refutes itself. Gide desires that his work corrodes and refutes itself in order to prevent that the romanesque illusion fascinates and captivates the the reader. Gide says “Every my book refute itself in itself, not explicitely but implicitely and it shouldn’t be based on any idea… I want that it denies and annihilate itself in itself”. In brief in his novel Isabelle the french novelist Gide ironises the romanesque by saying the opposite of what he wants to say through the irony art. So Gide utilizes the romanesque elements of the classical novel not to confirm them but to ironise them. Firstly he creates the romanesque heroes and then he develops them physically and psychologically in the plot, after that he makes them ridiculous. His purpose is to hinder that the readers imitate the heroes created in the imaginary world of the novel and they don’t identify with them. With these literary specifications Isabelle is a anti novel.

Abstract

Possessive suffixes have been subject of many scientific studies in various aspects including their qualities and functions up to now. However, though they have been studied in such a huge amount, there has not been any consensus that has been achieved on some issues related to these suffixes. One of the points that have to reach a solution related to possessive suffixes is whether possessive suffixes have derivational function. This subject, essential to reveal the functions of possessive suffixes in full, has not been discussed enough up to the present. While in some of the grammar books, there is no sign of function of possessive suffixes regarding derivation, in others; functions of possessive suffixes have been considered separately as single functions in forms of having information related to person, derivation and determinative. Considering the function called as determinative and examples related to such a function in grammar books, it may be observed that this function involves two other functions that are very different from each other. One of these is the feature of inflexional suffix with function of having information related to the person valid for all possessive suffixes. The other one is the feature of derivational suffix comprised of type/task modifier and derivational function as well as the function to form noun from noun by particularly third person possessive suffixes. In this study, first off, possessive suffixes and their functions have been highlighted and then comments related to determinative function of possessive suffixes have been assessed. Following them, derivational function and type/task modifier function of possessive suffixes have been examined and these functions have been explained and illustrated.
