THE STRUGGLE BETWEEN IDEOLOGY AND IDENTITY IN ORWEL'S 1984 AND PAMUK'S SNOW

Abstract

This paper examines the close relation between power and knowledge in the construction of identity by analyzing in what ways the characters in 1984 and Snow deal with the obligations of ideology imposed on them by the state in the framework of comparative literature. The methodology of comparative literature enables us to compare 1984 and Snow regardless of their authors' different historical and cultural backgrounds. In doing so, it makes us realize that the struggle for freedom is a cross-cultural issue. Borrowing various methods from different disciplines such as sociology and gender studies comparative literature helps us to read the novels from different perspectives. Concerning this, it is necessary to analyze the fight of the main characters against the hegemonic power over the bodies of individuals in the novels, even though they are aware of the punishment and torture they will face as a result of their resistance in relation to Stuart Hall's definition of identity and culture. Additionally, in the light of Foucault’s methodology, this paper discusses which strategies the authorities use to standardize societies and constitute 'imaginative communities' that share similar values and thoughts. Besides, the relation between gender and power in the construction of identity is also explored. Applying Judith Butler's ideas, a special emphasis is given on the female struggle against the masculine hegemony over the fragmentation of female identities portrayed in Pamuk's Snow where some Muslim female students are subjected to double-discriminated by laciest ideology because of their gender and religious identity. Finally this article points out that in comparison to the female character in 1984 the female characters in Snow defeat masculine discourses that try to control female bodies by creating 'a third space' for themselves.

Abstract

Hundreds of abbreviations and acronyms can be seen in daily newspapers, magazines, books, and encyclopedias, even on billboards. Abbreviations are part of our life and culture. Various fields of activity, such as stock markets, logistics, maritime, trade, transportation, health; science branch of medicine, chemistry, mathematics, physics includes a large number of acronyms. In our age, advances in communication tools concluded rapid communication. At the same time, the abbreviations are also increasing rapidly. In fact, the words are shortened by omitting the vowels; the shortest route is preferred for communication. Therefore, the acronyms must provide easy communication, and must avoid confusions. The unnecessary details such as point which has no contribution should not be used at the end of abbreviations. This symbolizing does not mean that you can do anything randomly. But abbreviations issue is left uncontrolled in Turkey. It allows you to do whatever you prefer. Sometimes there is more than one abbreviation or acronym for only one concept or institutions. For example: see (bakınız: bak, bk, bkz, bknz), Turkey Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK, RÜTÜK, RETÜK, RTK). There are limited number of studies in this area which includes no principle, and no unity. There must be a unity about the abbreviations and acronyms as much as there is in the words. Definitions, short history, studies in Turkey, kinds and principles of acronyms and abbreviations are studied in this article.

Abstract

Idioms, one of the most important elements of language, express the cultural heritage of a nation in the simplest and briefest manner. Idioms reflecting the historical, local, linguistic, sociological identity and the distinctive aspects of a nation in this manner, in the most practical way, are based on mythology, folk culture and divine texts. Idioms are often employed especially in daily language. Since idioms acquire the local characteristics of a nation, it is generally very difficult to translate them into other languages. One of the most important aspects of idioms is the fact that they include a fruitful and an effective expression in a short sentence. Therefore, they are often used in every culture and language. Among the idioms generally expressed in each culture, particularly those regarding the word eye play a very important part. In this study, the idioms including the word eye, which are often indicated in German and Turkish and which are based on textual materials, have been analyzed in terms of cultural, linguistic and historical aspects.

Abstract

Memtili Tewfik Ependi (1901-1937), who is among the literary figures with important works of the modern Uyghur literature, has left a lasting impression on the Uyghur national education history with his academician identity. Recently, we had the opportunity to access to the notebook of Mehmet Salih Artış, who is among the students of the poet. The poems in this notebook are composed of the songs that he taught to his students in the innovative schools opened with the support of the public in Atuş in 1930s. As it was not possible to publish the notebook within the boundaries of China due to its content, the notebook was kept as taught by the poet without undergoing any modifications. We had certain notes on the discipline of the poet in our study. Furthermore, the wording samples of the disciplines were reviewed and the duplicate was shared with the readers as the disciplines both reflect his world view, his teaching method, his studies on and struggle for awakening and informing the public, the Turkish intellectuals contributing to the studies and Turkish of Turkey and reflect the alphabet of 1930s when the New Uyghur was developed from Chagatai Uyghur and was newly shaped. Considering that the alphabet of New Uyghur underwent a change in 20th Century for a few times, the disciplines may enlighten those who wish to utilize the sources published until the Cultural Revolution in terms of reading. In brief, besides being a source for linguistic studies, the disciplines also have the quality for sociology.
