Lingua-pragmatic characteristic of children’ animated cartoon

Lingua-pragmatic characteristic of children’ animated cartoon

Abstract

The paper presents the lingua-pragmatic characteristic of the Ukrainian spoken literary language in contemporary children’s cartoon movie. It is the study of children’s cartoon movie in terms of lingua-pragmatics that reveals the main moments of its attraction on the one hand and the linguistic and stylistic techniques and tools, reflecting the conceptual time-spatial markers of the modernity and the pragmatics of social behavior on the other hand. Language of the characters has been differentiated by the socio-cultural and situational pragmatic plans with specific valuable, socio-role, cultural-linguistic characteristics. The role of the pastiche in creating of animated dialogues, its focus on the routine home practice and specific oral communication units has been identified. The pragmatic potential of the lexicon and stereotypical expressions in the language of children’s cartoons has been distinguished. The emphasis was made on the words and expressions that mark the social status of the play-characters and creature-characters with inherent fixed stereotypical patterns of language behaviour of representatives of different social layers, i.e., youth, teenagers, as well as psychotypes of lumpenized part of the society. It has been noted that such lexicon denoted the lingua-psychological symbol of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and the influence of such aesthetics of «easy-going» communication on the younger generation is worth talking about. The interaction between the proper language material in the animated dialogues and extralingual components, i.e. gestures, facial expressions, phrase’s rhetorical manner, as well as the awareness of the legal bases for certain actions of the characters has been analyzed. It has been admitted that the lingua-pragmatic potential of the contemporary children’s cartoon movie encompasses occasionalisms, the phenomena of enantiosemia, image-evaluating secondary nominations, and transformed phraseological units. It has been noted that the jargon phenomena are becoming more actively expressed in the language of the contemporary animation, and the role of slang words as the means of stylization of current lingual environment and social roles is strengthening. Evidently, lingua-pragmatics of children’s cartoon movies is formed by the contexts containing the socio-cultural characteristics, as well as the play on situational meanings, including culturally significant ones.

Abstract

The article considers frame patterns of affixed adjectives used as English economic terms. The investigation of English economic terminology in the mainstream of cognitive linguistics makes it possible to identify relations between lexical units and combine them into patterns. Patterns constituting some links are represented in mind by frames. The aim of the research is to identify peculiarities of frame patterns of affixed adjectives used as English economic terms. To achieve this aim, (i) the types of frame patterns of adjectives were described; (ii) the relationship between the type of a frame and an affix was determined. Frames are defined as units of knowledge which are stored in memory and form the conceptual structure of linguistic and extra-linguistic experience. Frames are distinguished according to the classification of Svitlana Zhabotynska. The research shows that affixed adjectives are correlated with thing, action, possession, and comparison types of frames. The thing frame arranges information about the inherent properties of a thing (SOMEBODY or SOMETHING). It is represented in English economic terminology by both suffixed (with suffixes -less, -ous, -ed, -ate, -y, -ly, -ent (-ant), -ive, -ful, -or, -al, -ic) and prefixed (with prefixes a-, anti-, in- (il-, ir-, im-), extra-, inter-, multi-, out-, over-, non-, sub-, bio-, con-, post-, pre-, super-, trans-, uni-, up-, under-, un-) adjectives. The action frame contains doing schemas that include SOMEBODY or SOMETHING – the doer of an action, and the action itself. Affixed economic terms of this frame are represented by adjectives with suffixes -able, -ed, -ous, -ary (-ory), -ent (-ant), -ive, -ful and prefixes ex-, over-, up-, non-, in- (il-, ir-, im-). The possession frame includes the generalized role of the possessor. Some adjectives with suffixes sub- та semi- of this frame are revealed among English economic terms. The comparison frame is constituted by the comparison schemas of identity, similarity, and likeness where the link undergoes modifications. It is represented by a number of adjectives with suffixes -y, -like, -ish, -ous, -ile, -like, -ar (-or), -ate. Thus, the research demonstrates that each type of frame correlates with a certain adjective suffix or prefix. The promising area of future research will be to identify frames correlating with different parts of speech in professional terminology and to study frames in discourse.

Inter-lingual lexico-semantic correspondences (based on Russian and Bulgarian languages)

Inter-lingual lexico-semantic correspondences (based on Russian and Bulgarian languages)

Abstract

The article analyses the concept of ‘equivalence’, which is rarely observed either at the level of inter-lingual lexico-semantic correspondences, or the level of translation units. The study is based on Russian-Bulgarian and Bulgarian-Russian dictionaries as well as translations contained in the Corpus of Parallel Russian and Bulgarian Texts (http://rbcorpus.com/). The nature of ‘equivalence’ as such becomes apparent at the linguistic level where information provided by the sign is, according to A. Lyudskanov, ‘free’ of the differences arising from the division of the world by different languages and their national characteristics but rather represents universal content, which exists and is determined by the unity of the world and the thought patterns of all normal human beings. As linguistic signs, the members of inter-lingual equivalent pairs and sets possess at least five universal lexical characteristics: interrelationship with semantic classes, genus-species relationship between the words, meaning, sense, and collocation. It is established that equivalents are semantically related units which are identical on the level of the class and the genus-species relationship. They are linked to the genus-species microsystem and, accordingly, we can differentiate between: a) equivalent invariants which reflect genus-species or species-species relationships, and b) equivalent variants which reflect genus-species relationships. The extent of content overlap varies: variants are modifications of invariants either narrowing or extending their semantic content. This variation does not alter substantially the content of the original word as the genus concept implicitly contains information about the species concept and vice versa.

Keywords: genus-species relationships, interlingual communication, invariant and variant interlingual equivalents transformation, lexical unit, semantic components, semantic content, semantic line.

Abstract

The collection of essays «My Shevchenko» expanded the great library of the works devoted to Shevchenko. These are stories of writers – our contemporaries – how they perceive Taras Shevchenko, on specific events associated with the image of the poet, about the feelings, which his works provoke. The brilliant poet, artist appears in the author’s essays not as a bronze monument, but as a person, whose creativity is full of eternal questions of life, is in unison with moods, feelings of our contemporaries. The authors destroy the stereotype image of Shevchenko, common in Ukrainian culture. We can trace the characteristic features of the present in the personal perception of the poet, the artist, to understand why Shevchenko’s creative work exists over time and space, why we call the poet the Prophet, after all, why we say that Shevchenko created a new Ukrainian literary language. Indeed, there was the Ukrainian language, as evidenced by history and written monuments of the Ukrainian language long before the «Kobzar» by Shevchenko, a small book of 1840, appeared. But only Shevchenko managed to engrave diamond from treasures of people’s language, according to Panteleimon Kulish, only he could open all the power and beauty of our language. The poet Shevchenko met Shevchenko-artist and Shevchenko-graphic artist and Shevchenko, who inspires the work of contemporary artists inside the pages of small booklet «My Shevchenko». The article deals with the modern perception of language and aesthetic signs of Shevchenko’s poetry. Writers, composers, sculptors, painters go away from the stereotypes of the image of the artist that were common in Ukrainian culture. Speculation of the writer Maryna Hrymych, journalist Yurii Makarov, composer Valentin Sylverstov is an immersion in the philosophy of language and confirmation of Shevchenko thoughts about the integrity of Ukrainian culture. The creativity of Kobzar exists in their arguments over time and space, they are deprived of artificial metalanguage, and these writings confirm the philosophy and intellectuality of Shevchenko’s language.

Abstract

The article deals with the theoretical aspect of verbal symbol studying as philosophical phenomenon. In spite of the multiplicity of the researched unit, its philosophical value it has been revealed concerning to image and sign simultaneously. Symbol is defined as a distinguishing sign; a sign or an image which represents an idea; watched or heard construction which is given a special meaning by a certain group of people and this meaning doesn’t coincide with the essence of this construction. It has been emphasized on the mythological conception of the world which dealt with the identity of symbolic form and its meaning. The symbols appeared as indirect representation according to the analogy, or due to the transferring the reflection from the object of consideration on a completely different notion. It has been noticed that due to the symbolic transcendentalism by E. Cassirer a significantly new meaning has been acquired the philosophical project of a theory of cognition and language, which is valuable concerning to the linguistic symbol research. It has been proved that the formation of philosophical symbol is based on aesthetically Germanic theory of romantics, which representatives considered the symbol from rational and semiotic point of view. This theory was developed in the Slavic philosophical thought, which defended the principle of correlation between idea and thing. It has been committed that in the philosophy of art a symbol is considered as a universal category, which is today closely associated with the expressive means of the artistic image.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of linguistic and conceptual pictures of the world, as well as their varieties. Considerable attention is paid to scientific picture of the world and in particular, to scientific concept. The author of the article underlines that on the whole the notion «picture of the world» is defined as the generalized logical reflection of the world in people’s minds in a certain stage of its development. The picture of the world is versatile; it includes the global image of the world that underlies in the human’s worldview. Thus, the picture of the world is subdivided into artistic, scientific, religious, philosophical and other pictures of the world, which form the conceptual picture of the world in an aggregate. The conceptual picture of the world is formed by mental images – concepts which produce conceptual sphere of the nation. The conceptual picture of the world can be represented as cognitive, because it is the result of cognition of reality and acts as a scope of well-organized knowledge, in other words conceptosphere is a set of concepts of the nation. Cognition of the world is impossible without language; as a result there is linguistic picture of the world, represented as a material embodiment of conceptual structures in language, i.e. the linguistic world image in its verbal embodiment. Different scientific viewpoints in relation to correlation of the notions «linguistic» and «conceptual» pictures of the world are presented in the article; the notion «scientific picture of the world» as well as «scientific concept» as its component is considered. The problem of differentiation of terms «scientific concept» and «scientific notion» is studied, as this problem attracts interest of scientists. The author of the article proved that scientific picture of the world is the aggregate of scientific knowledges about the world in a certain stage of human development. Scientific concept is a mental and linguistic phenomenon created in the process of cognitive activity of a professional in one or another sphere of scientific activity on the basis of his individual experience as well as the objectified in scientific works special invariant knowledge which is used by the professionals of certain sphere of science.

Abstract

The author of the article researches how the ethnocultural understanding of the world is objectified in the phraseological semantic space. The realization of the ethnocultural understanding of the extralinguoistic reality is connected with the ethnolinguocultural code, on which the formation of the phraseological semantics is based, which has its own role in the modelling of phraseological semantics by means of its original processes. The recent research showed that there is a growing interest of linguists, cognitologists, psycholinguists and ethnolinguists to the problem of language, culture and ethnic consciousness. It is due to intensification of awareness of human existence in the world system of specific ethnic cultural features, such as national mentality, language, ideas, values. As a result it has been found out the chain of components that determine the ethnic and cultural identity, given to the language, such as: (1) the unique set of accumulated knowledge about extra-linguistic reality in the process of cognitive activity of the ethnic group as a whole, (2) a method for projecting features of the worldview of a certain ethnic group, (3) the codec information of the people about different spheres of life – physical, social, spiritual. It has been proved that language phrasebook fund is valuable source of information about the culture and mentality of people. Phraseological units (PU) (idioms phrase comparison, paroimias) are informative symbolic means of ethnocultural interpretation of the known fragment of reality, ethnolinguocultural signs in structural and semantic models which record information obtained in the course of an ethnic group subject-practical comprehension of extralinguistic reality, formed in the national consciousness as a result of development of the world mental structures that contain established linguistic and psychic communication within the linguistic sign, and outside it, reflected in the meaning of a linguistic unit and semantic organization of propositions. The study showed a significant role of ethnolinguocultural code and its constituent namely elements-characters in the objectification of ethnolinguocultural awareness of the world. Ethnolinguocultural code manifests moral, ethical and socio-cultural values. Semantic content of ethnolinguocultural code of symbols is due to the understanding of reality by a certain ethnic group. As a part of the phraseological unit, code elements not only contribute their meanings in phraseological semantics, but also expand their scope of meaning, thereby deepening the understanding of the reality awareness making refinements in the mental range of the world vision by a certain nation.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify different aspects of culture, the forms of its existence in contemporary world. One of the main aims of the paper is to analyze the correlation of the concepts «linguistic competence» and investigate the role of these definitions in order to improve dialogue of cultures. At the same time article is shedding the light on impact of «tolerance» for development of intercultural relations as well as «linguistic competence» as a tool of increasing tension and stressful situations in the frame of intercultural communication. The paper reviews the issues of cultural diversity and possibilities of human beings to communicate on the base of mutual tolerant and respectful attitude. Besides, the paper examines culture as the important component and soft power influencing the development of international relations. Taking into account the importance of cultural differences in the development of the linguistic competence, it is considerable to motivate the development of this competence and speakers’ ability to treat with «others» in cultural diversified environment. Scholars (Hymes; Coulthard) emphasized that if we wish to communicate with others, firstly we must recognize the social setting, the relationship with other people, and the types of language that can be used for a particular occasion. We must also be able to interpret written or spoken speech within the total context in which they are used. The tolerance of cultural diversity refers to what kinds of approaches to differences are appropriate. If we wish to improve tolerance to cultural diversity we have to take into consideration that culture is not inborn and the more understanding we have for cultural variety between different countries, the more easily we tend to perceive tolerant attitude toward them.

Abstract

The article represents the main language signs of culture in «Zhinka» magazine, that are differentiated on onims and common names, linguo-subjectial and linguo-psychological markers which are associated with the world of art, ethnic, industrial, everyday culture. Among the language signs of culture singled markers of global knowledge, the level of philosophical understanding of the world and informatively filled signs which are typical for national community for certain time of its history, for a particular socio-cultural group, for discourse. It is pointed out that the word’s gaining of cultural sign status is connected with its socialization, i.e. increasing of additional semantic component – cultural information in the broad sense. A word as a sign of culture always has certain associations, i.e. secondary plan of expression. Exactly through such verbalizators of senses, one of the main functions of language – cumulative function is realized. Thus, the word with cultural information has a cultural connotation that is the result of strengthening of certain aspects of value on the basis of associative signs and axiological content of the language unit. Сultural connotations can be expressed by means of the words, phrases, phraseological units, sentences (aphorisms), texts. Thanks to typical linguistic signs the type of culture they represent may be recognized. In megatext of the language of «Zhinka» magazine the signs of culture are most clearly manifested in the titles of publications, names of rubrics, onims and other markers. The use of units with cultural connotationis specified with value orientation aimed at the linguo-cultural consciousness in a certain period of time. Such units always activate subjective, figurative, evaluative associations.

Abstract

This article deals with the problem of Ukrainian identity. The problems of national self-identification revealed by means of stereotypes described in the discourse of fiction with the help of individual opposition «me / another one». «I» is traditionally represented with a positive connotation. Individual opposition correlates with collective opposition «mine / another person’s». It is considered to be the basis of stereotype. Ukraine due to its geographical and historical factors has been crossing point of religions and cultures for centuries, in particular the culture of the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire. Ukrainian dichotomous world was formed. The integrity and identity specific culture has been lost because of the lack of a permanent state. The concept of stereotyping is associated with the concept of nation, national character, national identity, language. One form of national stereotyping is auto-stereotype. It has been proved that the concept of auto-stereotype can be ethnocentric. We can also define auto-stereotype of the Ukrainian according to cultural and language criteria. It has negative characteristics. This phenomenon is reflected in the literary texts of Ukrainian and foreign writers of the XIXth – XXIst century. These texts are sources of research of stereotype and auto-stereotype according to the criterion of mother tongue and the concept of patriotism. They reflect: 1) negative self-characteristic as a dominant sign of the Ukrainian auto-stereotype as a subject; 2) much less aggressive characteristic with the elements of norm and positive stereotypes of Ukrainians as the object. Auto-stereotype of the Ukrainians and its own stereotype are in the same time of negative emotional evaluation. Stereotype of the Ukrainians contains response that is more positive regardless of some auto-stereotype characteristics. Criteria in national stereotype and auto-stereotype don’t have a comprehensive implementation – Ukrainian identity – and migrate to some ethnic boundaries.

Abstract

The article considers the issues of Ukraine-China relations, which found its expression not only in Oriental studies. The review of works on the history of Sinology in Ukraine illustrates the relevance of this issue. The need to analyze the linguistic and cultural heritage in the aspect of coverage of relations with China as a fragment of displaying the linguistic picture of Ukrainians’ world, according to the author’s opinion, is extremely important. The choice of the linguistic and cultural approaches to the interpretation of linguistic facts, which are actualized in works of art, was caused by this fact. The purpose of this article is to study linguistic evidences of the Ukrainian-Chinese linguistic and cultural contacts. The tasks of the article are associated with the search of verbal evidence of possible intercultural relationships, with the defining the reliability of knowledge, which is reflected in the world view of an author’s language personality, with lexical and semantic analysis of the lexemes that explicate intercultural relations. A poem written by Hrygorii Savych Skovoroda «Talk about wisdom» was the material for realizing the goal of the article. Lexical and semantic analysis of the lexemes «хинский» and «хинцы» was based on the study of lexicographic description and contextual analysis of these words’ meanings. According to this analysis the conclusion was drawn not only about the time of functioning of these lexemes, but also about historical and cultural background of their use. This conclusion creates the potential not only to study lexical and semantic evidence of contacts between Ukrainian and Chinese cultures, but also gives the reason to analyze these manifestations in linguo-cognitive aspect. In addition, the works of many Ukrainian writers can be analyzed from this perspective.
