116/5000 Effect of applying a magnetic field on the in vitro germination of Rosmarinus officinalis L. seeds

Journal Title: Biotecnología Vegetal - Year 2010, Vol 10, Issue 2

Abstract

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) is a medicinal plant widely used due to its medicinal properties such as nervous system stimulant, antispasmodic, antiseptic, among others. However, blooms are sporadic, seeds viability is low and propagation by stakes is very slow. The objective was to determine the effect of applying a magnetic field on in vitro germination of Rosmarinus officinalis L. seeds. Rosemary seeds were treated with 0.16 T magnetic field during seven days. Then, they disinfected and placed in Murashige and Skoog medium without growth regulators (semi-solid or liquid). The number of germinated seeds per treatment was quantified and the percentage of germination was calculated. Seeds did not germinated in semisolid medium during the period evaluated. However, significant differences (p d» 0.05) were found between the percentages of germination of seeds subjected to the magnetic field compared to the untreated ones after 21 days in liquid culture medium. After 30 days of incubation a 55% germination increment in the seeds treated was observed.
