Abstract

The Russo-Turkish War of (1877-1878), also known as the '93 War, resulted in the defeat of the Ottoman Empire and the loss of land to a large extent. During the war, both sides lost many soldiers. The war took place on two fronts, the West (Balkans) and the East (Caucasus). The 4th Army headquarters in the Ottoman Empire during the war years was in Erzurum (later Erzincan). One of the provinces close to the Eastern Front and the 4th Army center is Sivas. In our study, the number 52 Sivas Qadi Registry (between 1879-1880) was analyzed and the martyrs and soldiers residing in Sivas were tried to be determined. The military classes to which the soldiers belong, the ranks they carry, their heritage and heirs are determined and the social-economic conditions of the soldiers and their families are evaluated. The registers also shed light on the protection of the rights of soldiers and their families. In the record we examined, 48 soldiers, 35 of whom were martyrs, were identified. It was also determined where 27 of the martyrs were killed.
