A bibliometric analysis of studies hotspots and trends in plant root system architecture

Journal Title: Journal of Henan Agricultural University - Year 2023, Vol 57, Issue 4

Abstract

[Objective] This study was conducted to provide new vision and new ideas for further research through analyzing the related research data of plant root system architecture. [Method] Synthesis research was conducted to illustrate the research outline of root system architecture based on 753 pieces of literatures in the database of Web of Science from 2011 to 2020 with the subject of “root system architecture”. Citespace information visualization method was used to analyze the annual number of literatures, countries and institutions, keywords, and research themes in the field of root system architecture, aim to summarize current research hotspots and trends, summarize the current research status, and prospects for future research directions. [Result] The result showed that the number of literature publications was continually increased from 2011 to 2020. The main subject categories were plant science, agronomy, and soil science. China contributed 28.69% of the total global research output in this field. The main keywords were divided into three clusters: root physiology, root system architecture, and plant type, with “drought” and “tolerance” being the hot keywords. The research interests were classified into four clusters: detection technology, effects of environment factors, root growth characteristics, and self-regulation. Among these, effects of environment factors emerged as a hotspot research direction. The research direction gradually transitioned from detection technology and root growth characteristics (2011 to 2013), plant self-regulation and root growth characteristics (2014 to 2017), to environmental impact (2018 to 2020). [Conclusion] Given that current research mostly focuses on the effects of root architecture on soil microbiota, soil water and nutrient ecology around the root system, it is inferred that the aboveground response to changes in root architecture to adapt to global climate change may become a future research hotspot.
