A case of anomalous flexor carpi radialis brevis muscle and its clinical significance
Journal Title: International Journal of Anatomical Variations - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 4
Abstract
Aim: To present an atypical case of flexor carpi radialis brevis (FCRB) and its impact on minimally invasive procedures to the volar distal radius. Methods: Minimally invasive volar plate fixation was performed on 16 standard embalmed cadaveric forearms in the University of Otago anatomy department. The forearms were then dissected to analyse the effect on the local anatomy and the position of the metalware. Results: One case of a FCRB was identified, with an atypical split tendon and insertion into the transverse carpal ligament and base of the index and middle metacarpal. The surgical procedure caused radial muscle fibre tearing of the FCRB. Conclusions: The FCRB is a rare anomalous muscle of the wrist. Its presence has a detrimental effect on minimally invasive procedures to the volar distal radius. Surgeons operating on the distal forearm should be aware of this anatomical variation to prevent inadvertent injury.

Anatomical variation in the origin of superior thyroid artery
The Superior Thyroid Artery (STA) is the dominant arterial supply of the thyroid gland, larynx and the neck. Awareness of variations in STA is crucial for invasive operations in the neck region. We reported a case that S...

Bilateral dimples that are rarely seen in the lower alignment of the mouth corners (Fovea inferior anguli oris)
Sacral Dimples take place in both gender with no specific preponderance, and may state unilaterally or bilaterally and are genetically inherited as a dominant trait. Besides the most seen dimples in our face, buccal and...
Anthropometric study on the anatomical variation of the external ear amongst Port Harcourt students, Nigeria
Background: The morphology of an individual‘s external ear and its dimensions vary amongst persons to the point that the right and left ears differ. Aims: This study is aimed at establishing the anatomical variation in...
Bilateral pectoralis minor muscle variant: A case report
During routine dissection of upper limb for MBBS students, an unusual attachment of pectoralis minor muscle (PM) was observed in a 78 year old male cadaver on its right side. PM was found to be arising from second to fif...
