A Clinical Review of Emergency Peripartum Hysterectomy at G.G.G. Hospital, Jamnagar

Abstract

Aims: To review the causes, indications, age groups, maternal and fatal outcomes in case of peripartum hysterectomies taken place in tertiary health care set up like G.G.G. Hospital, Jamnagar. Methods: All women who had undergone hysterectomy during pregnancy, labor and puerperium were included. It also contained women who had undergone hysterectomy due to sepsis or perforation due to curettage. Results: Out of total 19072 deliveries, in a duration of 2 years, there were total 32 Obstetric Hysterectomies. A rate of 1.67 per 1000 deliveries. With maternal age between 31-35 years, parity of >2 and uterus atonicity being the most common indication of all. Conclusion: Obstetric hysterectomy is a lifesaving procedure. Decision should be prompt and treated by an experienced surgeon. Every obstetrician should be trained to perform this procedure. Even so, by good obstetric practices, we should be able to bring down the number of obstetric hysterectomy.
