A Cohort Study on Physical and Psychological Risks in Teachers of Visakhapatnam city, India

Abstract
Background: Lack of good ventilation, low lighting, improper ventilation, imbalances in ambient temperature, improper air circulation can cause the incidence of occupational risks in teachers. Prolonged prevalence of above cited conditions may reduce the work performance and may leads to the physical and psychological risks in teachers. Objective: The present paper confers the physical and psychological risks in teachers related to their occupation. Methodology: Data collected from the sample size of 2268 by using a written questionnaire which includes their physical and psychological symptoms related to their work, food and personnel habits, health and wellbeing and medical history. One week time was given to complete the questionnaire. Oral interviews of teachers were also conducted to get brief picture about their work load, perceptions towards their working environment etc. Results: The data revealed that female teachers, younger age teachers and teachers who smoke are victims of psychological problems. The physical risks like Inflammation of throat and sneezing was noticed in more than fifty percent of female teachers and Dryness (hands and eyes) due to chalk use were observed in more than fifty percent of female teachers. The Psychological risks like Dizziness and Depression were almost similar in both male and female groups. The psychological risks were varied in age groups. Conclusion: The study confirmed that the teachers are vulnerable to physical and psychological risks. Less work load, good ambience, Use of audio-visual aids and 15mins gap after every period may reduce the physical and psychological risks of teachers.
