A COMPARATIVE PHYTO-PHARMACOGNOSTICAL EVALUATION OF STEM AND ROOT OF SHYONAKA (OROXYLUM INDICUM LINN.)

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Pharmacy (IRJP) - Year 2011, Vol 2, Issue 3

Abstract

The root bark of Shyonaka (Oroxylum indicum Linn.), family Bignoniaceae is one of the commonly used drug in Ayurveda. Because of its significant therapeutic activity like anti-inflammatory, analgesic etc its demand is increasing day by day. Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India (API) advocates that stem bark can be used in case of non-availability of the root bark. Considering these points, an attempt has been made to study on both root and stem bark of Shyonaka (Oroxylum indicum Linn.) pharmacognostically and physicochemically to evaluate whether both are having same physicochemical properties. The result shows that root and stem bark of Shyonaka proved to have similar pharmacognostical and chemical qualities.
