Journal Title: Stanley Medical Journal - Year 2016, Vol 3, Issue 4

Abstract

Objective : The study was conducted to assess the benefit of adding chemotherapy to radiation in patients with unresectable squamous cell head and neck cancers with the purpose of producing improved survival rate and better quality of life to the patients. Methods and Material : Conventional radiotherapy means giving a daily dose of 1.8 to 2gy, 5 days a week up to a total dose of 66gy. The patients were divided into two arms, Arm A - conventional radiotherapy without chemotherapy. Arm B - conventional radiotherapy with concurrent cisplatin, given on days 1, 22 and 43. Results are analysed between each experimental Arm at the end of the study and on follow up. Results : The study was conducted in 2012 and 2013. 15 patients were enrolled in each Arm. Toxicity is less in arm A, but survival rate is better in arm B. Conclusion : The addition of concurrent cisplatin chemotherapy to conventional radiotherapy improves survival. Toxicity was increased which was manageable.
