A COMPARISON STUDY BETWEEN GREEK AND GERMAN ELITE YOUNG HANDBALL PLAYERS IN SOME OF PHYSICAL AND ANTHROPOMETRICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Abstract
Objective: The present international comparison study between elite young handball players in Germany and Greek investigated some of physical and anthropometrical characteristics. This investigation of both elite profiles will allow us to know the difference of selection system elite young handball players of both countries.Methods: One hundred sixty two players participated in this study, eighty-eight Greek young male players and seventy-four German young male players. Greek players showed a mean (±SD) of 14.04 (0.36) years for age, 1.75 (0.06) m for height, 69.76 (12.13) kg for weight and 22.85 (3.35) kg/m2 for body mass index. German players showed a mean (±SD) of 14.11 (0.58) years for age, 1.68 (0.09) m for height, 62.44 (11.25) kg for weight and 22.32 (4.47) kg/m2 for body mass index. The players were measured arm height, weight, arm span, hand length and hand spread as an anthropometrics tests. Physical fitness measurements were sprint 30m, standing long jump, sit reach and 20m shuttle run test.Results and Conclusions: The results from this study demonstrate that physical fitness components are generally better in Greek young players compared to German young handball players. While some of these differences can be explained by the strategies and methods training difference between the players and also the environment training, the results do have important implications and conclusions for the physical conditioning of junior’s players.
