Journal Title: ViraVerita: Peer-reviewed E-Journal of Interdisciplinary Encounters - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 0
Abstract
Language and migration are the two facts with which history of humanity started and has proceeded. It is possible to observe that both concepts have undergone some changes in their definitions. However, when these two concepts are in question, the only thing that does not change is that they continue to play a key role in the course of human history. Because of that the fact of sharing a common history, we will try to examine the notion of migration on the basis of language philosophy and to reveal how language understandings affect the attitudes pertaining to the notion of migration. In this context, we will focus on Humboldt and Rorty, who start from entirely different concepts in their approaches to language. In this context, we will focus on Humboldt and Rorty, who start from entirely different concepts in their approaches to language. Humboldt identifies language with the spirit of a nation, while Rorty considers language as a contingent and conventional space. Our analysis on the approaches of the above figures will enable us to explore how their understandings of language can function in respect to the notion of migration. In so doing, we will be able to achieve two things: we will make the relationship between concepts of language and migration more visible and we will develop a new perspective to the notion of migration pertaining to language understanding.
