A cross-sectional study of physical activity in nursing students using WHO-GPAQ (Global Physical Activity Questionnaire)

Abstract

Background: World Health Organization’s (WHO) global action plan on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) commits countries to reducing physical inactivity(PA) by 10 % by 2025 from its level in 2014. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in Nursing College students in Nov 2016 to Jan 2017 to know Level of Physical Activity. Total 80 nursing students who have given consent were included in this study. Students with physical disability were excluded from study. Confidentiality of data collected was maintained. Necessary permission was obtained from the Institutional Ethical Committee.Data is collected by using WHO-GPAQ questionnaire translated into local language with face to face interview. Result: Overall only 33.75% (27) Nursing students are physically active. There is no significant gender difference in Physical activity. Level of activity is low in 66.25% students (Male-61.9% and Female 67.79%), Moderate in 25% (Male-28.57% and Female 23.72%) , High in 8.75% students. (Male-9.52% and Female 8.47%). There is no significant gender difference in Level of Physical activity. Conclusion: Overall only 33.75% (27) Nursing students are physically active. Recreational Physical Activity is very less in all students. All students showed very high sedentary behavior. Female students shown high sedentary behavior than male students.
