A descriptive study to assess the health care provider’s collaboration and satisfaction about care decisions and parent’s satisfaction about care provided to the parents admitted in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, APC, PGIMER, Chandigarh 2016-17

Abstract
Background : Parents are the primary caregiver of the child. They take care of child's both physiological and psychological needs. Once a child is hospitalized parents feel anxiety, fear, disappointment and guilt due to lack of confidence for caring the child. Hospitalization is a stressful situation where team approach is required for safe and satisfactory treatment of child. HCPs play an important role in caring for the sick children as they have direct contact with patients and their families. HCPs can come with suitable plans that actually work for a particular patientby sharing information with each other. Secondly good communication among HCPs leads to better results and greater satisfaction among parents. Lack of collaboration, compromise patient's safety due to several reasons like misinterpretation of information, unclear orders and so on. The main objective behind this study was to assess the health care providers'collaboration and satisfaction about care decisions and parents satisfaction about care provided to the patients admitted in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, APC PGIMER, Chandigarh, India. Methods : The study was conducted by employing quantitative non experimental survey approach. 50 parents of children admitted in PICU and 32 HCPs working in PICU, APC, PGIMER, Chandigarh were selected by total enumeration sampling method during March 2017. After filling Profile data sheet and information related to parental satisfaction were gathered using a structured interview schedule. Data related to health care providers'collaboration and satisfaction about care decisions were gathered using a structured questionnaire. The data was analysed using SPSS (version 20.0). Results : The results revealed that total 50 parents were enrolled in the study out of which maximum parents were highly satisfied (92%) with the care provided by the HCPs, while 8% were satisfied. None of them was unsatisfied with the care provided by the HCPs. Related to collaboration among HCPs, out of 32 HCPs, more than two third (87.5%) were highly satisfied with the collaboration among themselves related to care decisions while 12.5% were just satisfied with it. None of them was unsatisfied. Conclusion : It was concluded that majority of parents of children admitted in PICU, APC, PGIMER, Chandigarh were highly satisfied with the care provided to their children. On the other hand, most of the HCPs showed high level of collaboration among themselves and were satisfied with the care decisions related to the children admitted in PICU.
