A Different Approach to the Novel Types of Tanzimat Period

Abstract
During the process after the declaration of Tanzimat, many novels and novel types take part in the lives of Turkish readers through firstly translated and later adapted and original works. Even though the first period novels has various technical defects and deficiencies, they also triggers to the birth of vivacious, domestic and interesting types. The writers who targets to educate the community select their heroes from the society they are part of. The social issues in novel types that were scrutinized in this study, are basically women's role in society, wrong Westernization and slavery. The authors in the study are Ahmet Mithat, Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem and Namık Kemal; texts are Dürdane Hanım, Felatun Bey ile Rakım Efendi, Araba Sevdası, İntibah. In this context, various titles and classifications were identified on the basis of existence and functions of prominent subjects in the novels. These types were assessed with reference to their period, the representation features in novels and the perspectives of their writers.
