A GOSPEL IN SYRIAC (OLD SYRIAN) LANGUAGE EDITED IN HOLLAND IN 1717

Journal Title: Brukenthal. Acta Musei - Year 2006, Vol 1, Issue 0

Abstract

The author is dealing with an 18th century New Testament in Syriac (Old Syrian) language, published in the Low Countries. The first edition of this New Testament was issued in Vienna, in 1562, and it had only Syriac text. The second edition was published by Tremellius, in Heidelber in 1568. Tremellius contribution was important because he added punctuation as well as the Latin translation to the Syriac (Old Syrian) text. He did all these for didactic purposes, he himself being the Head of the Hebrew Studies Department at the Heidelberg University. All the successive editions were edited with Syriac and Latin texts. The thirteen edition – edited in Leyden by J. Leusden and C, Schaaf – was published in 1708. In 1709, as well as in 1717, there were published two issues if the 1708 edition. The copy of the Syriac New Testament which belongs to the Brukenthal Library is the third issue of the thirteen edition, in other words, the 1717 copy.
