A JOB SATISFACTION RESEARCH ON SEAPORTS

Abstract
Job satisfaction theories are based upon motivation theories of researchers like Maslow, Herzberg and Adams. There are many studies in literature to underline the importance of job satisfaction of workers and managers on organizational success, especially in service industries. The Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire has been frequently used to evaluate job satisfaction in literature. The 20-item short form of the questionnaire has been used to calculate the intrinsic, extrinsic and general satisfaction scores, and to examine the relation between selected demographic factors and job satisfaction. 47 usable responses (92.15%) have been collected from a total of 51 managers and white collar workers on the subject seaport. The reliability of the research depending on the Cronbach’s Alpha value is rather high (0.915). The findings suggest that the general (3.87) and intrinsic (3.96) satisfaction scores of the sample are high (>0.75) and the extrinsic (3.73) satisfaction is average being very close to high. The hypothesis tests (t-tests and ANOVA) suggest gender, education on maritime transportation, general education level and the time employed affect job satisfaction. The research contributes to the related literature with its findings related to job satisfaction on Turkish port management companies.
