A mini review: Metal remediation by microbes and plants
Journal Title: Journal of Biodiversity and Environmental Sciences (JBES) - Year 2014, Vol 5, Issue 2
Abstract
Heavy metals are found naturally in the earth. In very small amounts, many of these metals are necessary to support life. However, in larger amounts, they become toxic. The microorganisms may be indigenous to a contaminated area or they may be isolated from elsewhere and brought to thecontaminated site. Binding of metal elements to bacterial surface is due to the anionic properties of the bacterial envelope that is able to absorb metal cations. Phytoremediation is the name given to a set of technologies that use different plants as a containment, destruction, or an extraction technique. Phytoremediation efforts have largely focused on the use of plants to accelerate degradation of organic contaminants, usually in concert with root rhizosphere microorganisms, or remove hazardous heavy metals from soils or water. Phytoremediation consists of different plant-based technologies such as rhizofiltration, phytoextraction, phytodegradation, phytostabilization, phytovolatization, and phytorestoration.

The present communication deals with 25 algal taxa belonging to Cyanophyceae (18) and Chlorophyceae (7). The algae were found as epiphyte, epipelic and free –floating forms in Metiabruz, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The...
The diversity and density of Plecoptera in the headwaters of Cisadane River, West Java, Indonesia
The headwaters of Cisadane River originally flow from Salak and Gede-Pangrango Mountains of West Java, part of Mount Halimun-Salak National Park. As a conservation area, the presence of the park would protect the ecologi...
Search for polymorphism in growth and differentiation factor 9 (GDF9) gene in prolific beetal and tali goats (Capra hircus)
Growth and differentiation factor 9 gene is one of the main genes controlling prolificacy in sheep and goat. Mutations in this gene affect litter size in a dosage sensitive manner so that heterozygous animals have litte...
Effects of methanol on yield and some quality characteristic of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) in drought stress condition
A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Methanol on yield and some Quality Characteristic of Sugar Beet (Beta vulgaris L.) in drought stress condition in Maahdasht (Karaj, Iran), in 2012. Aqueous solutions were...
Determining the allowable use for Astragalus effusus Bunge in the mountainous and semi-steppe rangelands of Iran
Current research was performed in selected sites of mountain and semi-steppe rangelands of Iran. The vegetative region included Karsanak (Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari) and Jashlobar (Semnan). Astragalus effuses Bunge is a k...
