A muscle variant in the region of the popliteal fossa associated with the semitendinosus muscle
Journal Title: International Journal of Anatomical Variations - Year 2018, Vol 11, Issue 4
Abstract
Posterior thigh pain is frequently caused by straining the posterior thigh muscles. Because of these clinical implications, it is important for surgeons to have a comprehensive knowledge of muscle variations. During a routine dissection class at Ross University School of Medicine, a 57-year-old male cadaver presented with a unilateral muscle variation of the semitendinosus. In this case, an accessory muscle appears to originate from the belly of the semitendinosus muscle and passes down, through the popliteal fossa, to insert between the medial and lateral heads of the gastrocnemius muscle. The variant muscle may have compressed the popliteal vein and part of the tibial nerve during its pathway with potential implications for muscle function in the leg and foot. To the best of the author’s knowledge, such a rare anatomical variation has not yet been reported in the literature before.

Morphological study on mitral valve chordae tendineae in the hearts of human fetuses
BACKGROUND: Mitral valve chordae tendineae (CTs) are filaments of connective tissue that attach the mitral valves to the papillary muscles, which contract and cause tension on these chordae, so as not to allow separation...
Multiple variations in vertebrobasilar system: A cadaveric study
The intracranial parts of the vertebral arteries (VAs), basilar artery (BA) and their branches together form the vertebrobasilar system (VBS). Numerous anomalies have been seen in VBS, which are usually benign. Many auth...
Massive right-sided hiatal hernia variation
During routine cadaver dissection for academic purposes, a massive hiatal hernia was identified in an 84- year-old female cadaver. A herniation of abdominal contents was displaced into the right thoracic cavity, which co...
Significance of anatomical variations for clinical practice
Anatomical variations are an often encountered phenomenon and even though some have been described extensively in literature, many are still being reported for the first time. Clinical awareness of known and newly discov...
Rare anatomical variation of the cystic artery giving off 3 branches to the gallbladder
A routine cadaveric dissection demonstrated the cystic artery giving off 3 branches to the gallbladder (also known as Calot’s arteries). The arteries of Calot branched out as the cystic artery traverses along the cystic...
