A neglected giant parotid gland mass: Excision and reconstruction with facial nerve preservation
Journal Title: Otolaryngologia Polska - Year 2014, Vol 68, Issue 6
Abstract
Carcinoma ex pleomorphi c adeno ma (CXPA) is a malignant trans formed variant of pleomorphic adeno ma (PA). Generally it pres ents with a rapi dly growin g mass in the parot id gland within a preexi sting PA or follo wing sur gical resection of PA. Mainstream trea tment moda lity is surgical resection followed by radiotherapy if necessa ry. Facial nerve preservatio n and complete resection of the tumor are the main principles of the operation. Giant malignant derivates are not seen frequently and constitute a challenging task for surgeons to achi eve the main principles of resection. Prognosis of CXPA is poor and aggressive trea tment should be performe d immediately after the diagnosis. We pres ent a 82-year-ol d woman with a giant malignant parotid gland mass who was successfull y treated with surgery without any facial nerve injury.
