A new approach for determining skeletal age, based on the secondary ossification centers of the cervical vertebrae
Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2008, Vol 4, Issue 2
Abstract
Aim: to determine from a lateral headfilm the skeletalage, based on the appearance of the secondary ossificationcenters on cervical vertebral bodies during growth. To obtain the most information from a patient’s lateralheadfilm, in order to avoid additional radiation. Materialand methods: 280 lateral headfilms of patients of both sexes(female 153, male 127) from the Department of Orthodontics,Maimónides University, Buenos Aires, Argentina, were evaluated. The X-Rays were between the ages of6 and 18 years, distributed into age and sex groups. To eva-luate the maturity indicators (ossification centers) of thespinal column the second, third, fourth and fifth cervicalvertebrae were used. The following measurements wereevaluated:– Presence of the lower-anterior and lower-posterior secondaryossification centers;– Measurement of the lower concavity on the cervicalvertebral bodies;– Measurement of anterior and posterior height of vertebralbodies;– The lower-anterior angle and lower-posterior angle.– All values were statistically compared and evaluated. Results: The ossification centers of the cervical vertebras, resulted in significant parameters for the determinationof the skeletal age. Conclusions: it is possible to determine on lateral headfilmsthe skeletal age by the presence of the secondary ossificationcenters on the cervical vertebral bodies, with theavoidance of additional radiation that comes from a hand--wrist X-Ray. It also results in a cost reduction. (Orthod.Forum 2008; 4: 33-43).Received: 14.02.2008.Accepted: 18.03.2008.
