A New Approach to Measure Position Stability on the Bike in Time Trial Performance – A Pilot Study
Journal Title: Journal of Science and Cycling - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 2
Abstract
As air resistance is the main source of resistance on flat time trials (Martin 2006, Debraux 2011), aerodynamic analysis and optimization is an important part of the preparation. Besides wind-tunnel testing (Garcia-Lopez 2008), also tests in the velodrome using the Track Aero System (Alphamantis, Montreal, CA) are used. Here the CdA-value is calculated over several laps in real-time. However, this measurement technique does not capture changes in the rider’s position that possibly indicate instability. It is assumed that the athlete’s pelvic stability can be used as indicator for the stability with which a time trial position can be ridden, i.e. the position’s sustainability. Accordingly, this pilot study aims at analysing pelvic stability using a dynamic measure of the location of the centre of pressure (COP). This is an important parameter to quantify the pelvis’ positioning (Kraus 2015). Possible evasive movements on the saddle should be captured and quantified.

Pedal force effectiveness in Cycling: a review of constraints and training effects
Pedal force effectiveness in cycling is usually measured by the ratio of force perpendicular to the crank (effective force) and total force applied to the pedal (resultant force). Most studies measuring pedal forces have...
Methods of monitoring training load in welltrained competitive cyclists: the doseresponse relationship with changes in fitness and performance
Quantifying training load is an important part in the training monitoring process of cyclists. An essential part in evaluating the validity of a training load method is to examine the dose-response relationship between...
Optimisation of cycling training
Introduction: Training is fundamental to improving athletic performance, and progressive training schedules are commonly adopted. However, the quantification and optimisation of a progressive training schedule in order t...

Effects of recovery using contrast water therapy or compression stockings on subsequent 5-min cycling performance
Many researchers have investigated the effectiveness of contrast water therapy (CWT) or compression stockings (CS) during recovery, using subsequent performance as the principal outcome measure. However, data in the lite...
