A note on the particle size distribution of intestinal digestaand nutrient digestibility in growing turkeys fed diets with different whole-grain wheat contents
Journal Title: Journal of Animal and Feed Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 22, Issue 4
Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of varying levels of whole-grain wheat in the diet (12.5%, 25%, 37.5% and 50%) on the particle size spectra of duodenal digesta and nutrient digestibility in young turkeys. After feeding from 4 to 8 weeks of age, a linear increase in particles larger than 2 mm (P = 0.002) and a linear decrease in particles ranging in size from 1 to 2 mm and smaller than 0.071 mm (P = 0.001; excluding particles ranging in size from 0.106 to 0.071 mm) were noted in the duodenal digesta of turkeys. No differences were observed in the digestibility coefficients of dry matter and crude fibre or in nitrogen retention. Our findings indicate that the inclusion of whole wheat in the diet increased the proportion of coarse particles in the digesta leaving the gizzard, which did not reduce the apparent digestibility of dry matter and crude fibre, or nitrogen retention. Nonetheless, both the weight gain and feed conversion ratio worsened linearly with increasing amounts of whole wheat in the diet (linear contrast P = 0.002 and P = 0.001, respectively)

The effect of nutritional stress on sperm motion characteristics and sexual behaviour of rams in a semi-arid tropical environment
A major problem in sheep rearing is scarcity of feed during the summer and winter in semi-arid tropics. A study was conducted to assess the sperm motion characteristics and sexual behaviour of Garole x Malpura x Malpura...
Plant extract enhanced ruminal CLA concentration, in vitro
The effect of adding plant extracts to ruminal fluid on the formation of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers and on fermentation parameters was evaluated. Initially, fifteen plant extracts at two levels (1 and 2 mg ·...
Effect of dietary fat type on performance, biochemical indices and fatty acids profile in the blood serum of broiler chickens
The aim of the experiment was to compare the effect of different dietary fat sources on performance, biochemical indices and fatty acid profile in the blood serum of broilers. The study was carried out on 96 male Ross 30...
The chemical composition of selected dried fruit pomaces and their effects on the growth performance and post-slaughter parameters of young turkeys
The objective of this study was to verify the hypothesis that adding dried fruit pomaces differing in their polyphenol contents to diets for young turkeys does not compromise bird performance. Young turkeys aged up to 15...
Effects of some non-genetic factors on concentration of urea in milk in Polish Holstein-Fresian cows
The objective of this study was to estimate lactation curves of milk urea concentration for primiparous Polish Holstein-Friesian cows, milked in different months and air temperatures, using random regression test-day mod...
