A place for examining low starts – the distribution of forces on the starting block supports, response time and starting acceleration

Abstract
The present authors decided to improve the place for evaluating the distribution of reaction forces on block supports and added sprinter’s response time, mean starting acceleration, and time to cover the starting distance. The aim of the research was the evaluation of the afore mentioned parameters in the athletes revealing high performance which may help in optimizing trainings in improving the starting technique. Ten subjects were examined – sprinters of the athlete club of AZS AWF Wroclaw, specializing in 100 m, 200 m, and 400 m races and 110 m hurdle race. The collected data was analysed with basic statistical methods. In order to determine the magnitude of the relationship between the reaction force of the surface pressed by the leg on the block supports and the response time with the result gained at the distance of 20 m, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients were calculated. Our analysis indicates the following: 1. T ake-off force from the block supports, especially with the rear leg, significantly affects the time to cover the 20 m distance. 2. T he time to cover the 20 m starting distance considerably depends on response time 3. T ake-off force from the block supports highly determines mean speed and starting acceleration.
