A POSSIBLE ROLE OF MORINGA OLEIFERA LEAVES EXTRACT ON MYELOID DERIVED SUPPRESSOR CELLS IN BENZENE-INDUCED LEUKEMIA
Journal Title: European Journal of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 6
Abstract
Myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are a diverse population of hematopoietic precursors with the ability to affect host immunity. They have been revealed to be upregulated in cancer. Limited knowledge is available on myeloid derived suppressor cells of rat origin. The exact role of MDSCs in benzene-induced leukemia (BIL) has not yet been effectively studied. Alternatively, medicinal plants are important medical systems that have persevered in developing countries. Moringa Oleifera (MO), one of the best known small native tree, has been studied as a potential therapeutic agent that has anti-cancer activity. Doxorubicin hydrochloride (Dox) has proved to have potential therapeutic responses in acute myeloid leukemia. The objective of this study is to evaluate the therapeutic action of Moringa Oleifera leaves extract versus Dox on the MDSCs in benzene-induced leukemia. To that goal 112 young adult male albino rats were allotted into two major groups, control and experimental where each was further divided into 4 sub-groups. Total leucocytic count, flow cytometry for CD11bc+/His48+ MDSCs were assessed in peripheral blood. Also, histological sections in blood, spleen, and liver were studied in all groups. Results of the current study confirmed that Moringa Oleifera leaves extract seems to be most promising in overcoming doxorubicin side effects and decreasing MDSCs in benzene-induced leukemia, thus providing a novel insight into the application of Moringa Oleifera-based treatments.
