A Public Space: “Peace for Everyone”

Journal Title: Journal of the Human and Social Science Researches - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 4

Abstract

This study focuses on public sculpture which has evolved within a monumental approach and transcended its symbolic function in writing official history of a nation; finally becoming democratized. The first and as far as is known single artwork in Turkey which has given paved the way to such democratic gains is the "Peace for Everyone" sculpture by Meriç Hızal in Beşiktaş/Abbasağa. This paper investigates the art historical context of the sculpture in question. As in Meriç Hızal's all sculptures, this sculpture which has existed as a form indicating the time has also focused on arousing metaphorical meanings. Furthermore, "Peace for Everyone" is considered a democratic public space which eliminates all distances as a dynamic and active entity of meanings.
