A QUALITATIVE RESEARCH ON DEVELOPMENTS IN AUTONOMOUS SHIP TECHNOLOGY AND EFFECTS ON TURKISH MARITIME & SHIPBUILDING SECTOR

Abstract

This study aims to examine the developments in autonomous ship technology which is considered as the most significant reflection in the international maritime sector of global technological transformation process in the world , and its possible effects on the Turkish maritime and shipbuilding sector. With this aim, the literature on concepts and technologies of autonomous ships and R&D studies in the world maritime industry, possible effects on maritime and environmental safety, security, employment of seafarers and regulatory involving the exercise being conducted by the United Nations (UN)-International Maritime Organization (IMO)-Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) have been examined. Then a SWOT Analysis by taking into acount opinions of maritime professionals who are experts in their own fields has been carried out in order to determine any likely effects of autonomous ships on the Turkish maritime and shipbuilding sector.As a result of the analysis, possible opportunities, threats, weaknesses and strengths have been determined, and appropriate strategies have been expressed. It has been concluded that the autonomous ship technology will lead to siginificant technological transformation in ship design, shipbuilding, ship operation, marine insurance, port and shipyard infrastructures and maritime business processes. Therefore, it would be beneficial for the Turkish maritime and shipbuilding sector to define a road map in advanceand to be ready without delay for this great transformation process.
