Abstract

All the languages get in relations with the other languages around. The most language relations of Turkish is with Arabic. Turkish is a borrower more than a lender in its relationship with Arabic and the elements that are borrowed from Arabic can be seen easily in most of the written sources of Turkish. However, as the Turks reigned the area for many years, Turkish lent many lexical and grammatical elements to Arabic as well. In this article, the lexical and grammatical elements borrowed by Arabic fromTurkish and found place in the dictionary of Mevsuatü’l-Haleb El Mukarene by a Syrian Arabicscholar Muhammed Hayruddin El Esedi are studied. Esedi informs us about 320 words borrowed from Turkish to Arabic in his dictionary. However there is a long Turk-Arab relationship which composes the backdrop of this situation. It’s seen that Turkish words which was stated in Esedi’s encylopedie vary in terms of subject. It’s seen that food-drink names; as ‘armut’(pear), ‘ayran’, ‘bastık’, ‘bastırma’(pastrami), ‘bekmez’(grape molesses), ‘börek’(pie), ‘bulgur’, food names; as ‘alinazik’, ‘çorba’(soup), ‘imambayıldı’, ‘karnıyarık’, ‘kızartma’(frying), clothing names; as ‘peşkir’(towel),‘çamaşır’(laundry), ‘çarşaf’(sheet), ‘çizme’(boot), kitchen stuff names; as ‘çakmak’(lighter),‘çanak’(bowl), ‘sebet’(basket), ‘tebsi’(tray), ‘tava’(pan), words about and architecture; as ‘kavşak’(intersection), ‘konak’(mansion), ‘lokanta’(restaurant), ‘saray’(palace), ‘yol’(road), ‘çarşı’(bazaar), kinship names; as ‘ağa’(landlord), ‘ağabey’(big brother), ‘baba’(father), ‘baci’(sister), professions; as ‘aşçı’(cook), ‘berber’(barber), ‘çavuş’(sergeant), ‘baş katip’(head clerk), paraphernalia names; as ‘balta’(axe), ‘boya’(paint), ‘boru’(pipe), ‘çekiç’(hammer), ‘çengel’(hook), ‘gözlük’(eyeglasses), ‘soba’(stove), words about military; as ‘onbaşı’(corporal), ‘yüzbaşı’(captain), ‘paşa’(pahsa) live in Aleppo Arabic. It’s also seen that Turkish words which was stated in Esedi’s dictionary vary in terms of structure. It’s understood that simple words; as ‘yol’(road), ‘baş’(head), derivative; as ‘çakmak’(lighter), ‘konak’(mansion), ‘kızartma’(frying), also compound words; as ‘alinazik’, ‘imambayıldı’, ‘ağabey’(big brother), are used in Arabic.
