Abstract

Social, political and psychological context of a period may be listed as top three of the major factors determining the writing process and medium. It is generally not possible for an author to isolate himself from the influence of the period in which he lives. The acts and discourse of Mehmet Akif and his contemporaries, who represented a generation which observed the last days of an empire that has maintained its sovereignty for seven centuries, have always dealt with these hard times. Mehmet Akif who was one of the most significant orators during the first years of national struggle and republic, had remained an influential figure for a long time; leading people to the right path through his poems, his writing and even his sermons and discourse. However, having never given up his conservative posture and his integrity, had to move to Egypt following the enlightenment of his homeland for reasons which are controversial even today. Mehmet Akif, who was a reading, thinking, discussing, enlightening and guiding intellectual, continued writing and enlightening during his stay in Egypt. Nevertheless, homesickness, financial difficulties, familial problems and wrongdoings of the Islamic world led him to pessimism. This pessimism was also reflected in both the tone and the content of his poems written in Egypt. This study is to evaluate the poems which Mehmet Akif wrote in Egypt and was included in Gölgeler (Shadows) based on his life. Therefore, this study will deal with and examine the poems of Mehmet Akif, who kept his finger on the social life through his poems, in the light of the poems he wrote in Egypt. As a result, the study will be an attempt to draw conclusions on his state of mind through his poems and on his poems through his living conditions.
