A study of clinical profile and complications of Poisonous snake bites in a tertiary care hospital in south India

Abstract
Background: Snake bite is still a major public health hazard which is preventable and treatable. The clinical features of snake bite envenomation are highly varied. Aims: To study the clinical profile and complications of poisonous snake bite in this region. Settings and Designs: it’s a prospective study carried out on patients admitted with poisonous snake bite in the department of medicine. Methods: The study was conducted on 75 patients from May 2013 to May 2014. A detailed history, clinical examination and relevant investigations were done for all patients. Analysis Used: Analysis was done using SPSS software. Results: Out of the 75 patients most were males. Most of the patients were in the younger age groups Haemotoxic snake bites were the most common followed by neurotoxic snake bites. Cellulitis and coagulopathy were the most common complications seen. Capillary leak syndrome is associated with increased mortality.
