Abstract

The purpose of the study was to find out the energy intake and energy expenditure of fencing players training at Sports Authority of India- Special Area Games Centre – Thalassery, Kerala. The main objective of this study is 1. To assess the energy intake and output patterns of fencing trainees of SAI SAG Thalassery. 2. To compute the total daily energy needs (calculated using physical factor) and compare this with their reported energy intake. Fifteen female players aged 11-19 years, engaged in fencing sports were selected for this study. The tools used include a pre-tested questionnaire coupled with an interview schedule method. Energy intake was derived from three day-24 hour recall method. The energy expenditure was computed from the physical activity factor, weight and age. Mean, Standard deviation, ANOVA and regression tests were used to analyze the data. The mean age, height and weight of the players were 14.87±.601 years, 157.40±2.180 cm, and 50.33±2.023 Kg respectively. Their mean energy intake was 2965±116 Kcal and their total energy expenditure was 2764±150 Kcal. This indicates that the Energy intake was adequate and was meeting the daily energy needs of the players.
