A study of profile of clavicle fracture observed in tertiary care institute

Abstract
Background: Clavicle fractures account for around 4% of all fractures1 and up to 44% of fractures of the shoulder girdle. Fractures of the middle third (or mid-shaft) account for approximately 80% of all clavicle fractures. Aims and objective: To study the profile of patients suffering from clavicle fracture and attending the tertiary care institute for treatment. Materials and Method: In the present retrospective record based study all the patients suffering from clavicle fracture and admitted in the study institute during the year 2014 were studied. During the year total 29 cases of clavicle fracture were admitted in institute. The details of all the patients including demographic information, general and complete clinical examination findings were recorded. The side, site and mode of injury were noted. Results: Out of total 29 cases of clavicle fracture majority of the patients were young. 31.03% patients were 21-30 years of age and 17.24% were 31-40 years of age. Majority of the patients were male (72.41%). In 58.62% patient right sided clavicle was fractured. In 65.52% patient mode of injury was road traffic accident. Fall on outstretched hand was the mode of injury in 20.69% cases. In majority of the patients middle third clavicle was fractured followed by lateral third. In 55.17% with clavicle fracture were managed conservatively. 44.83% cases required surgical mode of management. Conclusion: Thus we conclude that the clavicle fracture was common in young male with direct injury as the most common mode of injury.
