A study on breast feeding practices in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh, INDIA

Abstract
Background: Breast feeding has been accepted as the most vital intervention for reducing infant mortality and ensuring optimal growth and development of child. It is the ideal method for the physiological and psychological needs of the infant. Breast feeding is of extreme importance for safeguarding health and welfare of growing infant and this practice must be persevered, protected and promoted by all means. Objective: This study was conducted to find the level of knowledge and practices regarding breast feeding. An attempt was made by the investigators to introduce correct feeding practices during the process of investigation. Materials and Methods: This was a cross sectional study conducted for a period of 6 months in the Kirodimal Government Hospital of Raigarh. A predesigned semi structured questionnaire using open and close ended question were used to collect the information. Results: 738 lactating mother were included in the study. Majority of subjects (51.21%) were in the age group 24-29 years. About 594 (83.48%) lactating mother initiate breast feeding practices within 1 hour after the delivery. Most common cause of delay in initiation in breast feeding were caesarian section and delivery complication (50%) and (22.91%) respectively. only (15.85%) baby were given prelactal feed. Conclusion: Study shows 84% infant did not received prelactal feeding. Only 15.84 received prelactal feeds, 80.48% received breastfeeding within 1 hour, this shows right practice of breast feeding in Raigarh District of C.G. State
