A Study on Efficient Value Chain Management of Grapes in Northern Karnataka
Journal Title: International Journal of Business Management & Research (IJBMR) - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 2
Abstract
Grapes are the rich sources of vitamins and minerals for consumers and income for those involved in production and marketing. Having first-hand information about grape production and marketing system is essential to devise appropriate strategies aimed at enhancing grape market chain development. The study was based on primary data collected from the sample of grapes growers, PHC, wholesalers, Commission agents and retailers in Vijayapura, Belgavi and Bagalkot districts of Karnataka. The relative efficiency of the production stage and marketing stage was calculated by using the variable returns to scale method as well as the peer groups and their weights of variable returns to scale were computed using the input-oriented DEA. It was used to examine the efficiency level of the farmers and to indicate how the efficient peer group farmers would be helpful to inefficient farmers in improving their efficiency level. The results of the study indicated that Vijayapura farmers were highly efficient in grapes farming followed by Belagavi and Bagalkot districts. Vijayapura farmers had a relatively better efficiency in marketing stages due to a lesser number of intermediaries and lower transaction costs. From the Two Stage Value Chain Model, it was inferred that grapes producers in three districts were doing much better in production than in marketing. This indicated an opportunity to improve incomes from the marketing perspective rather than production in the study area. Reasons could be stated as the use of optimal inputs, technical advice, capacity development, better crop care coupled with good agricultural practices.
