A Study on Feature Extraction and Classification on Medical Images

Abstract

The field of medical imaging has gained many important advances with the increase in the need of a completely automated and highly efficient diagnosis system in a short period of time. The shortage of medical professionals and large volume of medical images for analysis results in a laborious and highly expensive work that leads to inaccuracy. Hence there is a need for analysis and classification of medical images. Heterogeneity of the features in some regions also adds to the delicacy of the diagnosis. Feature extraction is vital because the particular features used for disease diagnosis has direct influence on the efficiency of the classification task. Image classification is one of such computer aided techniques for diagnosis, which can help in accurately identifying malignant tissues. This paper attempts to study about the feature extraction and classification techniques on medical images.
