Journal Title: National Journal of Research in Community Medicine - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 3
Abstract

Objectives of the study: To analyses nutritional status among adolescents between the ages of 11 to 17 years of age. Method:A cross sectional study was done with 396 students across three schools in Bangalore North. Data collected was sex, height, weight, type of housing, who they stayed with from classes VI to X. BMI was calculated and grouped according to percentile and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics v20. Results:Study population was 397(219 males, 178 females). Mean BMI for total was 18.29 kg/m2. Among total population (underweight 22.90%, overweight 5.30%, obese 3.30%), males (underweight 26.00%, overweight 3.70%, obese2.70%) and female (underweight 19.10%, overweight7.30%, obese3.90%); Nutritional status varied with various factors, with sex (males17.87 kg/m2, females18.81 kg/m2), with housing (pucca 18.67kg/m2, semi pucca 17.52kg/m2, kutcha 18.29kg/m2), with whom the child stayed with (both parents 18.44kg/m2, single parent 17.32kg/m2, hostel 17.79kg/m2).Conclusion: Males on average had a lower BMI as compared to females. Males has higher percentage of students underweight and comparatively higher percentage of females were overweight and obese. Greater percentage of females remained in the normal BMI range as compared to males. Students in pucca houses had highest BMI and lowest in kutcha houses, same was observed in females. Students staying with both parents had the highest BMI followed by students staying in hostels and the least was seen in students staying with single parents, same pattern was seen among males and females.Recommendation:Healthy eating practices and regular assessment of BMI is necessary to maintain the right BMI. Efforts need to be made to improve the housing conditions for students. Every effort must be taken to ensure that the child stays with both parents for better nutrition. Greater care, effort and monitoring is needed in cases of single parents and children living in hostels.
