A Study On Suicidal Cases Among Women In Warangal District, Telangana State

Abstract

BACK GROUND: Worldwide one million people are dying due to suicides. It is one of the important causes of death. 60% increase in incidence is noticed in suicides. It is more common in productive age group of 15-44 years. Multiple risk factors are responsible for committing suicides. To understand the precipitating factors of suicides among females the present study designed and conducted at Kakatia Medical College, Warangal from 2007 to 2009. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study is an analytical study conducted from 2007 to 2009. All females died due to suicidal cause irrespective of investigating officer were included in the present study. The cases with ambiguity, unclaimed bodies and decomposed bodies were excluded from the study. A format was designed by including the parameters like age, marital status, education, socioeconomic status, cause of death and place of death. OBSERVATIONS & DISCUSSIONS: In the present study, 400 cases were included. It was noticed the peak age group involved in suicides is 20-<30 years. The young age group is more emotional compared to older. Population with rural background committed more number of suicides. Majority of those committed suicide belongs to illiterate group. Dying declaration recorded in only 34 cases and in the remaining no proper information was available. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS: In the study the commonest mode of committing suicide is poisoning and followed by burns. Identification of behavioural changes of an individual early, counseling, documentation of data, dissemination of information are essential to avert suicides.
