A study on the growth and concentration of Zn, Mn and Na by two Wheat cultivars in response to application of Zn in natural saline soils

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 7, Issue 12

Abstract

Salinity stress is one of the main agricultural problems of the arid and semi-arid areas in production of the agricultural products. In order to investigate the influence of Zn levels in soil salinity conditions on the growth and Zn, Mn concentration by different parts of wheat (Trictium aestivum), a study was conducted with three levels of salinity (2.7, 6.4, 10.2 dS.m-1), four levels of Zn (0, 10, 20 mg Zn/kg soil and foliar application) and two wheat cultivars (Ghods and Atrak) in the form of factorial and completely randomized design with three replications. The results showed that the salinity led to a decrease in all of the parameters of the two wheat cultivars. Land application of Zn with the concentration of 20 mg.kg-1 resulted in an increase in the yield of shoots and grain. The lowest and highest protein percent in every salinity and Zn treatment belong to Atrak and Ghods cultivar, respectively. As the application of Zn increases, the concentration of Zn in the shoots and grain increased significantly. The results suggested that addition of Zn in the conditions of low to medium salinity can improve the growth and finally the wheat yield through decreasing the effects of salinity. The most concentration of Mn in shoot in Ghods cultivar belong to 2.7 ds.m-1 level of salinity (64.1 mg.kg-1) and for Atrak cultivar this content measured about 67.1 mg.kg-1. Atrak cultivar has more endurance potential in salinity conditions than Ghods cultivar.
