A STUDY ON THE PATTERN OF SEGMENTAL ARTERIES IN HUMAN KIDNEYS AND ITS VARIATIONS

Journal Title: Journal of Evidence Based Medicine and Healthcare - Year 2014, Vol 1, Issue 7

Abstract

The present article is based on the analysis made from gross dissection of hundred post mortem and embalmed kidney specimens. The study includes subjects of both sexes which belong to different communities in Assam. The findings are compiled and presented. The clinical significance and possible explanations of the variations have been discussed in the light of available literature. The salient findings of the study are summarized below. Total 100 human kidneys were studied. It was found in the present study that the human kidney has constant segmental arrangement and distribution of renal artery within the solid substance of the kidney. On the basis of arterial distribution, the renal parenchyma is divided into five segments, which have been aptly named the apical, upper, middle, lower and posterior, each of which is supplied by its own segmental artery as stated by many text books. But a lot of variation has been observed in the course and in the exact point from the origin to the termination of these segmental arteries. Out of 100 kidney specimens, 49% shows the commonly found four segmental patterns of anterior division. The rest 51kidney specimens presented with a single or multiple variations. For the apical segmental artery, 53% shows its usual site of origin from anterior division along with other segmental arteries. Rest of the 47 kidney specimens presented with single or multiple variations. 82% of upper segmental arteries show its usual site of origin from anterior division. Rest 18 kidney specimens presented with single or multiple variations. 56% of middle segmental arteries show its usual site of origin from anterior division. Rest 44 kidney specimens presented with single or multiple variations. 60% of lower segmental arteries show its usual site of origin from anterior division. Rest 40 kidney specimens presented with single or multiple variations. For the posterior division of renal artery, 73% divides normally into three terminal branches. Rest of the 27 kidney specimens shows other patterns of division. There is no statistically significant difference between the right and left sided variations of anterior division, posterior division and accessory renal arteries.
